For the past 3+ years, we have been paying for hosting services by WestHost. Throughout that whole duration of time, we have kept a close eye by tracking their performance on uptime and also the average loading time.
This particular review relies mainly on tangible data such as:
- Load time (speed)
- Customer support experience
What is WestHost?
In 1998, WestHost was founded by Chris Russell who eventually in 2008, merged his efforts with UK2 Group. WestHost is considered to be among the oldest of web hosting services out there. Not to forget that, the UK2 Group also owns one of the strongest web hosting services ( MidPhase) which has ranked as a top 5 host on HostingFacts.com.
Based on the data from the data center in Salt Lake City, Utah, WestHost itself managed to boast of hosting more than 1 million websites worldwide. They have also claimed to be the most reliable and affordable web hosting. We carefully investigated what other users think about them and also used their service to gain firsthand experience. With our unbiased review, we hope to be able to help you make a well-informed opinion on WestHost.
Web Hosting for Websites in Malaysia
Searching and selecting for the best web hosting website might be something that is very stressful especially in regions such as Malaysia, whereby web hosting services are not as well-known compared to how it is in other regions.
Not only that, complicated figures and technical jargons add to the difficulty of understanding the concept of web hosting.
Today, we will ease your mind by helping you to better understand web hosting especially in terms of the benefits that you will receive from web hosting services available in Malaysia while at the same time highlighting the most important aspects of websites, such as:
- Customer Service
The Benefits on Using WestHost Hosting
1. A free domain name
WestHost offers a free domain for life. Compared to the other web hosting services, whereby you will be charged quite a sum of money for every domain renewal, WestHost promises that as long as you stick with them, you will not have to pay a single cent for the renewal of your domain name
2. Free migration and 30-days money-back guarantee
Transferring a whole load of files and websites from your current web host to a new server might be a burden to you. WestHost understands your difficulties and will help by easing the transferring process. On top of that, they also have a 30-day money-back guarantee (just in case WestHost does not fit into your Asian budget plan) for any reason you might think go back on your decision.
3. Immediate activation
Contrary to other web hosting services, where you would have to wait an excruciatingly long time ( a few days or hours) just to activate your account, WestHost activates your account immediately.
4. Security and backups enhancement
WestHost is one of the most secure hosts with regular nightly backups for their web hosting plans and support from an Automatic Malware Removal and a CloudFlare CDN for better online website security and privacy.
The Disadvantages on Using WestHost Hosting
1. Lower uptime than the Industry Average
Uptime is the measurement for uninterrupted time on a web hosting system. For most web hosting, the ideal measurement for uptime is 100% (yet this is so hard to achieve in the real world)
Technically, the average uptime for WestHost is 99.93% (slightly lower than the industry average by 0.01%).
2. Slow load time
To be honest, WestHost provides a rather slow load time compared to the industry ideal.
From the test that has been performed, the average page load time of WestHost is 893ms which is close to the industry average of 890ms and significantly slower than top-rated web hosting services.
3. Difficulties in connecting with technical support
In connecting with the technical support, it takes more than 40 minutes to get connected to them, yet the support assistant was very helpful and friendly despite the long wait.
On the other hand, they do offer a toll-free number for anyone who would like to contact them from the U.S (which is very impressive).
After research, we found out that the customers of WestHost had mixed reviews on their technical support team.
4. The “unlimited” hosting plans
From the WestHost hosting plans, they stated that they provided unlimited- databases, files and bandwidth for the users, however, their statement on Terms and Conditions page contradicts their advertising:
“Our unlimited shared hosting is designed to meet the needs of most small businesses and personal websites; it is not designed to meet the needs of large businesses or client services that fall outside the average usage pattern for shared hosting and may be better suited for hosting plans that provide expanded features. Accounts with a large number of files (inode counts in excess of 200,000), databases exceeding 5GB in size or a cumulative size of all databases in excess of 10GB can have a significant impact on server performance. We reserve the right to request that the number of inodes (files and directories) and/or database sizes be reduced to help ensure server performance. Failure to comply with these requests may result in termination of your account.”
In short, your account should not have databases that exceed a cumulative amount of 10GB, despite their promise of “unlimited” hosting for the users. If your files and databases are detected as huge, they can simply request that you reduce the size of your files or upgrade to a better hosting plan. If you fail to fulfill their request, there is a high possibility whereby your account will be terminated effectively.
We can say that we are not happy with what they are trying to hide, as they claim to have an “unlimited” hosting plan, but contradict their statement in their Terms and Conditions.
5. Cheaper plans after 3 years commitment
Most of WestHost’s shared hosting plans are priced too high and not properly advertised.
For example, in the advertisement, it states that you can get your hosting plan at RM8.27 monthly if you pay up to three years at once. While the normal price is RM33.23 per month, and the minimum that you can pay is 3 months at RM37.39 per month.

Do we recommend using WestHost?
No, we do not recommend that you use WestHost.
From our research, WestHost is similar to another average host as they can only sustain average page loading speeds, support and uptime. We believe the only reason why WestHost is still ranked top 10, is because of their low pricing.
