One of the oldest web hostings, does the experience reflects its quality?
What is GoDaddy Hosting?
Obviously, there’s no need to introduce GoDaddy since everyone saw their ads of Super Bowl over 10 years ago.
They were founded in 1997 (more than 20 years already!) and their original name was Jomax Technologies. (Thank god they make their best decision in changing the name, pheww…)
GoDaddy started in Baltimore, Maryland before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona. (They are seeking more heat, I guess..)
The founder, Bob Parsons makes a huge risk in selling his old company to Intuit in gaining $65 million a few years before founding the GoDaddy. (He sure knows what he is doing)
Not only that, with total revenue of $2,231,900,000 per year, they are reported as one of the biggest domain registrars in the world with more than 6,000 employees in servicing for more than 17 million customers, including Malaysians.
What Is It All About?
In other words, we can say that they are doing more than just OK.
But then, when it comes to web hosting, size does not always matter.
From our previous experience, majority of the biggest brands that we have tested, most of their performance is not that good (read: worst results). After all, it just doesn’t make any sense with high amount of money, high number of employees and powerful server, yet their performance is still awful.
By that, we purchased their plan in evaluating their performance ourselves especially in terms of their uptime and speed.
Let’s see how it goes.
The Advantages of GoDaddy
1. Great uptime of 99.96%
With the average uptime of 99.96% for the past ten months, that is such a good start.
Here’s the quick look at their performances:
- December 2017 average uptime: 99.97%
- January 2018 average uptime: 99.98%
- February 2018 average uptime: 99.96%
- March 2018 average uptime: 99.91%
- April 2018 average uptime: 99.99%
- May 2018 average uptime: 99.94%
- June 2018 average uptime: 99.98%
- July 2018 average uptime: 99.85%
- August 2018 average uptime: 99.99%
- September 2018 average uptime: 99.99%
2. Amazing Page Speed
In maintaining the website, one of the most important aspects is the speed.
The big question is why?
Simple answer. Because the internet is totally obsessed with it.
In other words, the internet is only looking for a website with amazing speed. If the page speed is low it only leads to few downturns such as a less number of revenue, fewer conversions and less visitor.
Back to GoDaddy, we can say that we are also surprised with their performance for the past ten months.
The past months they have held an average of 455ms steadily. It might be too early to call them as the best, but then we can see that they already at the front-runner, competing for the top position.
Last 10-month average load time:
- December 2017 average speed: 389ms
- January 2018 average speed: 363ms
- February 2018 average speed: 415ms
- March 2018 average speed: 386ms
- April 2018 average speed: 395ms
- May 2018 average speed: 415ms
- June 2018 average speed: 492ms
- July 2018 average speed: 540ms
- August 2018 average speed: 593ms
- September 2018 average speed: 564ms
3. Complement with additional services
GoDaddy might seem to be known for their hosting and domains, yet they also have every product that is needed in building a website especially for the small business people.
In other words, with the countless amount of complementary products, we can consider them as the one-stop shop.
For example, GoDaddy will include their website builder and GoCentral so you can simply build your own website. Not only that, but they also will connect you instantly with over 125 applications in adding up to your new web hosting account.
They will also take further action and connect you with the web design professional if you would like to build a website more than the typical simple website, with professional layout and arrangement.
By that, you don’t even lift a finger because you could simply add the products that you want straight to your cart, request a proper call from an expert, and let them take care everything so that you can continue to do what you do best.
Disadvantages of GoDaddy
Everything sounds so good, right?
As having great uptime and amazing speed, it all sounds so perfect as what as you hope.
We also hoped that all along the way, too bad it is not always sunny, we discover few hiccups here and there.
Here are the biggest issues that we discover with the GoDaddy:
1. Expensive Price Plan and Limited
The cheapest plan for GoDaddy is the most expensive low-priced plan in the industry.
In adding to their flaw is they included features that are not as worth as the expensive price. After all, the basic features that are usually included in the web hosting such as backups, CDN or SSL certificate are not being included.
In other words, the features that you are receiving it is not really worth to the pay.
2. Messed-up number of upsells and high fees on every renewal
Do you remember the SSL certificate that had been mentioned earlier?
Things are going virtual for any website today and basically, Google is starting to require the certificate of SSL to ensure the security of the site for their customers or they would shamelessly giving you warning repeatedly. (Yup…)
But then, it is the best for every internet users, right?
At first, GoDaddy is playing along giving free SSL certificate together with the new account hosting. (read the first two words, “at first”)
Then, they started to mention about the price for every renewal of more than RM306 for every year in their fine print, if you read and pay attention to it. (Wait, what?)
Not only that, usually when it comes to upsells you usually get all the complement features all together once you buy the domain name. Right?
And GoDaddy decided to make themselves to be “unique” (I guess), they will give you one email account when you already signed up for the new hosting plan.
Wait up, that’s not even the worst part…
For every mailbox, they will charge you up to RM244 every year.
Majority of the web hostings, they will include all special features all together because:
- It doesn’t really much to the company
- It will help in keeping their customer longer
GoDaddy will also give you for free as well, then… they will charge for every additional feature.
3. Vague guarantee on money-back
Usually, the money-back guarantee will make people not hesitate in purchasing the web hosting plan.
But then, it is different compared to GoDaddy.
At first, they stated that the hosting plans can simply be refunded if it canceled within 30 days after it is being purchased.
But then, in the fine print:
“If a Hosting Service has already been performed, then it is non-refundable (if not yet performed, eligible for a refund within 30 days of the date of the transaction).”
So do you get your refund or not?
Good luck in finding out the answer.
4. Mixed reviews on the Tech Support
We have personally had mixed reviews with the Tech Support of GoDaddy.
At their U.S-base, their phone tech support is great especially in solving the in-depth issue (even it does take hours)
However, how about the simple question that requires a simple answer? What are the options given?
We tried to set out a live chat with them, and this is what we got:
We even tried to load the page repeatedly, the result is just the same.
