What’s the story?
iPage web hosting is owned by the Endurance International Group (EIG). iPage is a company that provides web services such as web hosting and domain registration. It was obtained in 2010 by the founder, Thomas Gorny.
Considering that EIG has been around for 20 years, it’s safe to say that you do not want to mess with them.
Yup, you guessed it, the ever fearsome EIG.
Initially began in 1998, the company now has headquarters in six global positions. Currently, they’re serving over one million websites between two data centers in the states.
With that out of the way, grab your teh tarik as you are in for one hell of a review from one of the top 10 web hosting companies in Malaysia.
Pros of iPage
Firstly, the goods. Unlike other web hosting companies, iPage is undeniably the cheapest hosting option applicable, like unbelievably cheap.
The support they provide is quite good, though sometimes, it can be inconsistent.
Also, if you’re worried about your security issues, rest assured you can go take a walk around the park peacefully. This is because they partnered with SiteLock to ensure that the highest security measures are provided for you.
Below are the details that show the benefits of iPage:
1. Cheap, affordable web hosting
Coming in at only RM8. 18 per month, that marks iPage as one of the cheapest web host available in the industry.
However, that price is only available in the 36-month subscription package. If you’re looking for a short term package, they offer a 24 and 12 months subscription which comes at a low-cost price. The 24 months subscription package comes at RM10.23 while the 12 months subscription package comes at RM12.29.
If you’re the type of person who is looking for a cheap hosting option, fear not, iPage is there for you.
2. Solid customer support
You’re in tough luck my friend if you are expecting impressive customer support with that pricing. iPage’s customer service is not that impressive yet they can get the job done by providing a solid enough support through email, phone and live chat.
A review that I encountered is that they have to wait for 20 minutes before the live chat finally goes around. Despite the wait, they are quite satisfied with the service. Other reviews also mentioned that it is actually more impressive than you would think.
Probably, different people different outcomes I guess.
3. Enhanced security options
Every iPage hosting plan include a SiteLock Security Suite. It’s like a bodyguard for your website.
A user study shows that 12% of subscriber sites contained malware at some point in the year 2014.
But then if you are wondering what SiteLock does to your site, they prevent unwanted security breaches by scanning for malware regularly. Not only that, they also have extra features like clearing away malicious stuff on your site but that all comes down to your subscription plan.
Moreover, they utilize a firewall so that any security leaks are prevented. Here’s an example so that it gives you a clearer picture. If your site is running with outdated plugins, it makes you an easy target. Therefore, regular updates routinely reveal where holes or breaches exist in past versions.
Another benefit if you’re the person who keeps forgetting to back up their content like most Malaysian college students, iPage provides daily backup services, another bonus which is good considering other companies charge for it.
4. Third-Party Application Support
Next, by simply connecting with Google Apps, PayPal, and others we can say that iPage mingles well with other companies. Those with e-commerce websites should be glad as you need to handle payments securely.
As another added bonus, they offer bonus credits especially to fresh accounts for Google AdWords, Yahoo, and Bing.
5. Upfront, Honest (Cheap Pricing)
A major benefit amongst Malaysians because what else do we like more than cheap and honest pricing. For most EIG brands, they look inexpensive at first but then, the horrors begin at the checkout section. You’ll start to connect the dots and realize you need to cash out three years worth of price all at once.
Thankfully, iPage does not hop in that trend. As in contrast, iPage will be charging you the same on a monthly rate, regardless of the duration you’d prefer. Honesty and transparency, the right way to go.
6. 30 Day Refund Assurance
Moreover, you might have stumbled across other web host’s money-back guarantee and are probably thinking that iPage provided the same kind of policy.
Wait up! Let me stop you there.
The difference between iPage and its competitors is that if you request your money back, they will give it to you straight away, no questions asked.
On the other hand, their competitors, won’t simply give you your refund if you use a specific amount of bandwidth or payment method that their guarantee does not compensate. (which is a bummer.)
7. Solid Uptime Of 99.98%
Besides, with great pricing comes great speed. The iPage’s uptime is on par with its rivals which is very good for them to be known as the top web hosting companies.
Last 10-month average uptime:
- December 2017 average uptime: 100%
- January 2018 average uptime: 99.98%
- February 2018 average uptime: 99.97%
- March 2018 average uptime: 99.98%
- April 2018 average uptime: 100%
- May 2018 average uptime: 100%
- June 2018 average uptime: 99.98%
- July 2018 average uptime: 100%
- August 2018 average uptime: 99.90%
- September 2018 average uptime: 100%
8. iPage is Eco-Friendly
Above all, iPage is an eco-friendly web hosting as it is certified with EPA Green Power Partner. If you’re unsure of what I am saying, their data centers and web servers are powered by wind energy.
By using proper sufficient of Renewable Energy Certificates (REC), iPage can simply balance their use of energy by up to 200%.
In other words, that’s similar to the same amount of planting 5% of trees in the globe and removing 5% of cars from the road.
Cons of iPage
1. Loading Time Should Be Improve
First of all, iPage’s loading time is 820 average. That is only a tad faster than it’s competitors’ average loading time (890ms).
That is embarrassing considering a lot of good web hosts regularly deliver page loading speeds of below 500ms.
You should consider this as a big problem because slow page loading time means it can affect the SEO negatively. This can result in lower rankings and less visibility, as a result, it can lower down the traffic to your site.
Last 10-month average load time:
- December 2017 average speed: 888ms
- January 2018 average speed: 854ms
- February 2018 average speed: 804ms
- March 2018 average speed: 870ms
- April 2018 average speed: 818ms
- May 2018 average speed: 816ms
- June 2018 average speed: 723ms
- July 2018 average speed: 862ms
- August 2018 average speed: 812ms
- September 2018 average speed: 758ms
2. Pricey Renewal Costs
Secondly, through those rosy, cheap plans comes with a thorny edge. For example, when your ‘low promotional pricing’ plan ends, the renewal cost will jump to a whopping RM36.94.
This occurs to all the plans that the iPage has provided.
3. Costly Domain Names
The good news here is that iPage will give a new domain name with a 30-day money-back guarantee for new account signups.
But then, here is the problem.
They will deduct RM61.64 of the domain fee if you do ask for a refund during that 30-day window. (for most cases, it’s only RM41.97).
In conclusion, the money-back guarantee is not that good or free all this time.
4. No cPanel
Compared to other web hosts which mostly uses cPanel, iPage uses another less famous alternative which is called vDeck. As vDeck is not user-friendly, it can cause a lot of users annoyed consequently.
5. Unlimited? Nope
Last but not least, take a closer look at their user agreement and you’ll find a different result.
It’s only “unlimited” if you don’t overstep the number of CPU assets that they’re allowing to your account.
Obviously, there is a chance that iPage will suspend your account if you do exceed that particular amount.
