What’s the story?
In 1999, HostRocket was founded as a web hosting company located in Clifton Park, New York. Ever since its foundation, the company goal is to have great emphasis on value, technology, availability and support.
While they say they prioritize their goals, but are they really able to provide all of these to meet their consumer’s expectations?
So let’s find out here with our HostRocket review.
Pros of HostRocket
Let’s get to know the good side of their services first with our HostRocket review.
With HostRocket, they start with a strong opening by providing choices for man apps and also a good customer support.
Here are the pros of using their services that you should take note in this HostRocket review.
1. Good Customer Service
HostRocket uses a ticketing and telephone system for their support, so there’s no contact through live chats or emails. Ticketing systems generally have a bad reputation as it takes forever (in Internet speed) to get a reply to resolve the problem.
But it turns out that they were fast as it only took 11 minutes to receive a reply from them. Besides the speed of their reply, it was informative and helpful.
After doing a background check on other customers’ experience, there’s confirmation of a overall good experience. Problems or complaints that customer’s experience arises from other reasons (which will be discussed later) not their customer support.
2. Choice Between 2 Server Locations
This would be like getting a prize from a surprise box. Prizes from the box “are good but when you receive the item it’s just… meh”, so it doesn’t satisfy you. Why?
They give you an option to pick a data center you would like to use. On paper, this would seem like an advantage if you’re trying to accommodate customers from different countries than yours.
So what’s the problem with this?
They only have two data centers in the U.S. which are in Chicago and New York. So if you don’t know U.S. geography, both of these aren’t that far from each other. They’re like less than a two-hour plane ride, close.
On paper it seems to be good advantage but in reality it’s just decent.
3. App Integrations for Over 250 Apps
This is just small benefit worth mentioning before going to the bad side of their service. HostRocket has integrations with over 250 popular applications (like WordPress, Drupal, Magento, Zen Cart, Open Cart, and more), this should be able to help you get set up a little faster.
Cons of HostRocket
Let’s get to know the bad side of their services through our HostRocket review.
Even though, HostRocket started quite decently, here is where they begin to fall due to a few stumbles along the way. Here’s the HostRocket review for the disadvantages of their service.
1. Slow Page Loading Time (Over the Past 24-months)
HostRocket has a loading time of 906ms in the past 24 months which is just average because the industry-standard speed is 890ms so HostRocket loses to other competitors.
However, it’s not all bad as HostRocket has made slight improvements in terms of its speed results from January 2019 to November 2019 which resulted in a speed of 569ms. So there’s a chance for them to improve further on their page loading time in the near future.
Nevertheless, their loading time is still not up to industry-standard so their loading time is still considered slow.
Last 12 months average load times:
- February 2019: 831ms
- March 2019: 796ms
- April 2019: 649ms
- May 2019: 714ms
- June 2019: 787ms
- July 2019: 723ms
- August 2019: 715ms
- September 2019: 723ms
- October 2019: 766ms
- November 2019: 569ms
- December 2019: 507ms
- January 2020: 476ms
Between November 2019 and January 2020, the speed is actually good so it shows improvement.
2. Uptime of 99.91% Over Past 24-Months
The standard uptime in the industry is 99.94%. So very little down time can be expected (~26 minutes) in a month so sales and customer support should not be affected badly.
For HostRocket, they were able to hit a 99.91% uptime which is just slightly below the industry-standard.
All in all, the performance for HostRocket is just a hit and miss in certain months as they were able to perform 100% and some other months their performance were unsatisfactory.
Last 12-months average uptime:
- February 2019: 100%
- March 2019: 99.96%
- April 2019: 99.92%
- May 2019: 99.96%
- June 2019: 99.96%
- July 2019: 99.45%
- August 2019: 100%
- September 2019: 99.91%
- October 2019: 99.58%
- November 2019: 99.57%
- December 2019: 99.96%
- January 2020: 97.96%
From the HostRocket review their average uptime is just decent and inconsistent in certain months.
3. Quite an Expensive Hosting
The cheapest plan available in HostRocket starts at $5.99 (RM24.49) a month. This quite expensive considering their performance is just below average.
This becomes worse as you have to sign up for 2 years which requires an upfront payment to enjoy that inflated plan rate. People say you pay for what you get, which is true for some hosts but HostRocket is not one of them.
Our HostRocket review for their pricing is something that brings them down a lot even if people want to try it out. It’s still not worth it because of their server performance.
4. There’s Still A ‘Setup Fee’ ($29.99)
Normally most web hosting companies will gladly be obliged to get your site ready to go for free! Like helping you move your existing site or even giving a free domain name to be used for a year.
Sadly, based on our HostRocket review they don’t do that, as they are one of a few who still impose a ‘setup fee’ for the price of $29.99 (RM122.60) monthly or semi-annually should you decide to use their service.
Having to pay for a hosting plan is already a lot and to add an additional ‘setup fee’ will just make consumers move on to other hosts. If the host provide lots of benefits and good performance then that would still be fine but from our HostRocket review they just have an average load time and uptime which is not worth it to pay for the ‘setup fee’.
5. Costly Domain Name Registration ($20)
Even though HostRocket provides a free domain name upon signing up. Any other additional domain names will cost about $20 (RM81.77) anually.
As you can see from this HostRocket review, the way they price their service is a bit over as people normally would use hosting services for a long time. But in their case if you use for a few months and find that the cost is too much you would just leave from their services.

RocketHost, should you or should you not?
Do We Recommend RocketHost?
They have great customer service which is good but they lack in other areas like:
- Inconsistently slow loading times
- Below average uptime
- Expensive hosting
- Additional ‘setup fee’
- Costly domain registration.
All in all, HostRocket still has lots of room for improvement if they want to have a name in the web hosting industry in Malaysia. You still can give it a try but you should lower your expectations.
